A Ukrainian teenager was charged in Poland for sabotage acts on behalf of Russian intelligence to incite Poland-Ukraine ethnic tensions, including memorial desecrations and planned drone attempts.
An 18-year-old Ukrainian man was charged by Polish prosecutors with 47 criminal acts of sabotage between November 2024 and August 2025 on behalf of Russian intelligence, aimed at inciting ethnic tensions between Poland and Ukraine. The sabotage included desecration of memorials to Polish victims of the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) involved in the Volhynia massacre during World War II. The suspect allegedly recruited others for these crimes, paid via cryptocurrencies registered in Russia and China, and planned to fly a drone over Polish president Karol Nawrocki's vehicle during the 2025 Armed Forces' Day parade in Warsaw. The ABW highlighted that Russian intelligence has focused on exploiting historical Polish-Ukrainian antagonisms and discrediting Poland internationally. The incident is linked to broader tensions between Poland and Ukraine over historical interpretations of the UPA and was compounded by Ukrainian president Zelensky naming a military unit after UPA heroes, which led to Nawrocki stripping Zelensky of Poland's highest state honor.
Confidence: High
The sabotage acts were orchestrated on behalf of Russian intelligence to create ethnic tensions and discredit Poland internationally, constituting hostile hybrid warfare behavior with clear intent and external manipulation.
