Unraveling Havana Syndrome: New evidence links the GRU's assassination Unit 29155 to mysterious attacks on U.S. officials and their families

The Insider, in collaboration with 60 Minutes and Der Spiegel, conducted a yearlong investigation uncovering evidence that unexplained health incidents known as Havana Syndrome are linked to directed energy attacks by Russia’s GRU Unit 29155. The unit, known for assassinations and sabotage, has been geolocated near victims worldwide, including at least two attacks in Tbilisi, Georgia, in October 2021 and Frankfurt, Germany, in 2014. Victims include U.S. Embassy personnel, their families, and other government employees. The investigation reveals travel logs, call metadata, and eyewitness testimony identifying operatives, including Albert Averyanov, son of the Unit 29155 commander. The unit has a history of high-profile covert operations such as the Skripal and Gebrev poisonings and armament depot bombings in Europe. Health effects from attacks include neurological symptoms and traumatic brain injuries. Despite a 2023 intelligence report deeming foreign involvement “very unlikely,” former U.S. intelligence officials and victims challenge this assessment. The U.S. government has enacted the Havana Act to compensate victims. The report exposes operational details, covert travel, weapon development related to "non-lethal acoustic weapons," and raises questions about intelligence community transparency and accountability.
