In late July 2026, near the Kapčiamiestis border post in Lithuania’s Lazdijai district, a confrontation occurred between Lithuanian border guards and a group of approximately 20 migrants who entered Lithuania through an underground tunnel dug from Belarus. During an ambush set by four Lithuanian border guards, several migrants were detained and handcuffed. The migrants attacked the border guards, forcing them to retreat. One Lithuanian officer was lightly injured while migrants allegedly attempted to push him into Belarusian territory. Lithuanian prosecutors expanded their investigation to include actions of border officials responsible for surveillance, control, and protection. Lithuania continues to face repeated attempts to cross the Belarus border using underground tunnels, including an August 11 incident where 15 migrants were caught and returned to Belarus. The Lithuania State Border Guard Service has been reluctant to confirm the attack on its personnel, and conflicting statements have been reported.
