Poland uncovered four tunnels under its Belarus border used for illegal migrant crossings linked to Russian hybrid warfare, with expertise traced to Hamas tunneling techniques in Gaza. Poland reinforced its border with a wall and surveillance systems.
Poland discovered four tunnels under the Belarus border used to illegally bring migrants into Poland as part of Russia's hybrid warfare strategy targeting Europe. One notable tunnel in December 2025 allowed at least 180 migrants, mainly from Afghanistan and Pakistan, to cross into Poland. The tunnels originated some 164 feet inside Belarusian territory and extended about 33 feet into Poland. Polish officials link the tunneling expertise to Hamas in Gaza due to similarities with the Gaza Metro tunnel network. Polish Interior Ministry proposed extending emergency border measures restricting access. Poland has built a 128-mile border wall with Belarus backed by 3,000 cameras and sensors to counter infiltration. Russia and Belarus deny facilitating migrant flows. About 30,000 attempts were made in 2025 to enter the EU through Belarus. The tunnels reflect advanced subterranean techniques uncommon in Western militaries but typical of Gaza militants, Taliban, and criminal networks. Local terrain includes swampland and the Białowieża Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Polish officials assert their border security is capable of responding to underground breaches.
Confidence: High
The tunnels are an unconventional hybrid warfare tactic designed to facilitate illegal migration flows into Poland/EU, attributed by officials and experts to Russian strategy with Belarus cooperation. The technical tunneling links to Hamas and possibly Taliban experts reinforce the hostile cross-border infiltration nature.
