On September 1, 2026, a Russian citizen killed three people at a shooting range in Danilovgrad, Montenegro, then committed suicide after shooting at police in Herceg Novi.
On September 1, 2026, a 30-year-old Russian citizen named Mihail Nikolaevici Șabunin killed three Montenegrin employees at the Ceska Zbrojevka shooting range in Danilovgrad, Montenegro. After the murders, Șabunin fled in one of the victims' vehicles, which was later found in Rogami near Podgorica. Police located Șabunin in a forested area above the Topla district in the coastal town of Herceg Novi, where after being surrounded, he opened fire on police officers and then committed suicide with a firearm. Police believe Șabunin had visited the shooting range in the days prior, conducting test firings before entering the building and committing the murders. He traveled by taxi from Podgorica to Herceg Novi after the incident. Authorities described him as dangerous, armed with a weapon and ammunition. The three victims were unarmed employees at the shooting range. Police initially urged residents to remain indoors and avoid contact with strangers while the suspect was at large. No motive or additional circumstances behind the crimes have been disclosed yet. The Police and the Higher State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica are investigating the case. Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milojko Spajic extended condolences and declared September 1 and 2 as mourning days in the country.
Confidence: High
The incident constitutes a lethal targeted attack by a foreign national inside Montenegro followed by violent engagement with law enforcement and subsequent suicide, involving multiple casualties. This qualifies as hostile violent criminal activity with potential hybrid implications due to the perpetrator’s nationality and the nature of the attack.
