In June 2026, coordinated information activities were observed in the Latvian media aimed at depoliticizing and humanizing the image of sanctioned billionaire Pyotr Aven. The campaign leveraged social and lifestyle media outlets to shift focus from political controversies, sanctions, and legal disputes to private life aspects, luxury consumption, and social presence, thus normalizing Aven's position in Latvian society. The initial trigger was a June 8, 2026 publication on Santa.lv about Aven's daughter’s lavish wedding, originally disseminated from an anonymous Telegram channel in Russian. The campaign expanded to other platforms including LA.lv in Latvian and Russian languages. Concurrently, on June 8, 2026, Dmitry Savin, head of the Russian civic society and emigrant support association AREM, sent an open letter to Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs requesting immediate annulment of Aven's Latvian citizenship and his deportation due to alleged ties to the Russian Defense Ministry and refusal to condemn the war in Ukraine. The government responded promptly by forwarding the demand to the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Despite this, major media holdings controlled by large publishing and consulting companies demonstrated deliberate ignorance of the official action, maintaining Aven’s image limited to luxury lifestyle depoliticized narratives and avoiding coverage of legal or political complications. This reflects a soft normalization information strategy to reduce the public’s perception of Aven’s image toxicity and limit negative political signaling.
