Latvian MFA warns citizens against participation in illegal migrant trafficking in Europe, noting arrests of Latvian nationals acting as transporters and urging caution with foreign job offers.
The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns about a growing trend of international organized crime groups recruiting Latvian nationals via social networks to act as transporters in illegal migrant trafficking across several European countries, including Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, and Serbia. These individuals are often promised legitimate transportation jobs with good pay but are actually involved in the illegal movement of migrants from countries such as Iran and Syria within the EU. Several dozen Latvian nationals have reportedly agreed to such offers. The Ministry highlights serious legal consequences including detention and criminal prosecution, with penalties of multiple years imprisonment. In 2024, 21 Latvian nationals were detained in Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, and Poland for such activities, with additional cases reported in 2025. The Ministry advises caution in accepting foreign job offers and urges verification of the identity and legal status of persons transported. It also reminds that any involvement in illegal migrant transportation or support for migrants unlawfully staying in Latvia or the EU is punishable by law. Contact points for assistance are provided.
