Nearly 450 Drones Sighted Over Bundeswehr Sites Amid Suspected Russian Espionage

According to investigations by WDR and NDR, there has been a significant increase in drone sightings over Bundeswehr training grounds since the outbreak of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Reported drone sightings rose from 9 in late 2021 to 172 in 2022 and further to 446 in 2023. German security agencies suspect that Russia may be using these drones to spy on Ukrainian troops being trained in Germany. Although no conclusive evidence directly links the drones to Russian intelligence, the use of commercially available drones complicates attribution. Possible espionage tactics include the use of IMSI catchers to identify Ukrainian soldiers' mobile phones for later targeting on the battlefield. The Bundeswehr has responded by enhancing countermeasures, including relocation of some training activities to shielded areas, deploying jammers and surveillance systems to disrupt or bring down suspicious drones. Notably, a drone was recently successfully intercepted and recovered, marking the first confirmed drone defense. The issue was significant enough to be discussed at the German chancellor's office, and calls from politicians for a clear drone defense strategy are growing. The Military Counterintelligence Service has highlighted the serious threat, emphasizing the need to protect military sites from such covert overflights.
