Estonia protested to Russia over unfounded claims of drone attacks launched from its territory, condemning a Russian disinformation campaign against the Baltic states and reinforcing NATO solidarity.
Estonia summoned Russia's charge d'affaires ad interim on May 21, 2026, to formally protest Russia's sustained disinformation campaign targeting Estonia and the broader Baltic region. The Estonian Foreign Ministry condemned Russia's false accusations that Estonia has allowed its territory or airspace to be used for drone attacks against Russia, a claim Tallinn firmly rejected. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated these allegations are false and linked the drone presence in the Baltic region to Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine. Tsahkna emphasized that Ukraine's right to strike military targets within the context of self-defense is legitimate under international law. He also reinforced NATO solidarity by warning Moscow that threats against one alliance member are threats against all, asserting united support from NATO allies. Latvia and Lithuania have issued joint statements dismissing similar Russian claims about Baltic territorial involvement as baseless disinformation. Russia has not publicly responded to the summoning.
Confidence: High
The event documents a formal protest by Estonia against Russian-origin disinformation campaigns that falsely allege Estonia's support for attacks on Russia, consistent with documented Russian hybrid warfare strategies involving propaganda to destabilize NATO border states. The sustained and coordinated nature of these information operations, combined with simultaneous denials from Baltic states and reinforcement of NATO unity, clearly indicates hostile hostile aggressor activity.
