On 1 December 2025, suspicious drones were detected over the Bundeswehr's new Arrow 3 missile defense radar site near Annaburg, Brandenburg, with a failed attempt to shoot one down.
On 1 December 2025 at around 16:40 local time, German Bundeswehr forces detected three suspicious drones of unknown type flying about 100 meters above the newly inaugurated Arrow 3 missile defense radar site near Annaburg in the border region between Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, and Saxony. One drone was visually confirmed by a Bundeswehr reconnaissance drone. A quick reaction unit deployed a G27P assault rifle equipped with an Israeli-made Smash X4 aiming optics specially designed for drone countermeasures, but this failed to neutralize the drone, which then evaded further detection. The incident was reported in a classified Bundeswehr internal report. No suspects were identified or publicly speculated on, but the Military Police and Military Counterintelligence Service were notified and a formal criminal complaint was filed. This occurrence was the second such suspicious drone overflight at this sensitive €3.6 billion radar site, which protects German and parts of Eastern European airspace against high-altitude missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles from Russia. Authorities assessed the incident as likely intentional espionage linked to the system's formal inauguration ceremony two days later, attended by military leadership including the Luftwaffe Inspector Holger Neumann. The Bundeskriminalamt reported over 1000 suspicious drone flights over Germany in 2025, with security circles suspecting partial Russian involvement. Previous similar incidents occurred in Schleswig-Holstein in early 2025 at a Bundeswehr Patriot missile site where Ukrainian troops had trained. Germany has improved drone defense capabilities, inaugurating a joint federal-state drone defense center in Berlin and establishing a 130-strong specialized Federal Police drone countermeasures unit in Brandenburg. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius issued statements on the Arrow 3 inauguration but did not attend the ceremony. The Bundeswehr confirmed legal authority to immediately counter micro- and small drones during imminent threats to security and operational readiness. The drone attack failure highlights ongoing challenges in detecting and neutralizing low-flying unmanned aerial threats over critical military infrastructure.
Confidence: High
The event describes a hostile drone intrusion over a critical German missile defense site, likely reconnaissance or espionage. The Bundeswehr's attempt to defend and counter the drones, along with steps to improve drone defense capabilities, qualifies as both aggressor action and defensive preparation. Official Bundeswehr reporting and multiple corroborating details support high confidence.
