German cabinet proposes law enabling Bundeswehr to shoot down suspicious drones over critical sites amid rising drone incursions in early 2025.
Due to an increase in illegal drone sightings over critical infrastructure and military facilities in Germany, including the US Ramstein Air Base and Ukrainian military training centers, the German federal cabinet presented a draft law on 14 January 2025 to amend the Aviation Security Act. This amendment would authorize the Bundeswehr to use lethal force to shoot down suspicious drones if the safety of human life or critical infrastructure is at risk and when police forces lack the technical means to counter the threat. The plan, promoted by SPD and Greens, aims to address drone incursions perceived to be carried out by foreign state actors, with Russia being a suspected source. The Bundestag is scheduled to discuss the draft in sessions in late January and early February ahead of the 23 February federal election. The law seeks to close current gaps where the Bundeswehr can only issue warnings or force landings but cannot engage drones with force.
Confidence: High
The article describes a defensive legislative measure by the German government authorizing the Bundeswehr to counter drone incursions, which are suspected to be hostile actions by foreign states but does not describe an actual hostile incident.
