Estonia is considering purchasing Ukrainian-made drones for its army, with official discussions ongoing to potentially open tenders to Ukrainian producers.
On November 1, 2024, the Estonian Defense Minister, Hanno Pevkur, and Major General Andrus Merilo expressed Estonia's interest in acquiring drones from Ukraine to strengthen its military capabilities. Pevkur highlighted the high quality of Ukrainian drones and stated that if Estonia announces a tender for drones, Ukrainian companies will be eligible to participate alongside Estonian and Western producers. Estonian-Ukrainian defense cooperation discussions were planned, including a meeting between Pevkur and Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umierov. Although Ukraine has an arms export ban during martial law, Pevkur indicated political and legal avenues exist to facilitate the purchase, benefiting both countries. The Estonian government also plans to order weapons from its own defense industry to support Ukraine, strengthening bilateral military-industrial ties.
