Latvia tested drone interceptor systems against Shahed-like UAVs during NATO Baltic Trident 26 exercises with 650 personnel from Latvia, NATO, and partners. Cooperation with Ukraine on UAV tech and production emphasized.
During the NATO Baltic Trident 26 exercises at the 'Seļiņi' training ground in Latvia, counter-drone systems, including interceptor drones, were tested against Shahed-like UAVs. Approximately 650 personnel from Latvia, NATO member states, and partner nations (including Ukraine, Australia, and Japan) participated. European Union technology industry representatives also joined. Armed forces specialists tested their developments in near-real conditions. A unique NATO format exercise was tested involving private sector equipment suppliers acting also as direct providers of services and capabilities. Military personnel can delegate engagements to industry representatives who deploy their own pilots and engineers. In late July, Ukraine and Latvia signed memoranda of understanding to expand cooperation in unmanned systems development, aiming to attract UAV production investments, transfer Ukrainian technologies, and establish modern testing infrastructure in Latvia. This cooperation formalized between the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Economy, Latvian Investment and Development Agency, Baltic Forces Ltd, Ukrainian partners, Riga Technical University, and the Latvian Association of Military Technologies, Drones, and Robotics. It was also reported that Latvia and Ukraine plan a joint drone production facility in Latvia's border region of Latgale.
Confidence: High
The article describes defense exercises focused on counter-drone systems and cooperative UAV technology development, indicating defensive preparation rather than hostile aggressor activity.
