On the morning of September 13, 2023, locals in Nufăru commune, Tulcea county, Romania, approximately 15 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, reported hearing a loud drone engine noise followed by an explosion. Witnesses claim a drone crashed and exploded near a military unit in the area, identified as military unit 02131 in the village Victoria, known to conduct ammunition disposal activities. The incident occurred around 4:50-5:00 AM, with the drone coming from the direction of Ukraine. The local authorities and military secured the crash site, preventing public access. This was the third such drone crash incident in the region, following two prior events near Plauru in Ceatalchioi commune. Military radars reportedly did not detect or track the drone while it was flying over Romanian airspace. Investigations by the Ministry of National Defence and emergency services were ongoing, with uncertainty regarding if the drone carried explosives, but eyewitnesses confirmed an explosion. The event aligns with broader patterns of drone incursions related to the conflict in Ukraine.
