In April 2026, the UK disclosed a month-long operation where British and allied military assets tracked a Russian Akula-class attack submarine and two specialist deep-sea research submarines operating covertly in the North Atlantic near UK waters. The submarines were surveilling critical undersea infrastructure including cables and pipelines. Using Royal Navy warships and RAF P-8a aircraft deploying sonar buoys, UK forces ensured continuous monitoring. The Akula submarine withdrew after tracking, while the other vessels remain monitored. UK Defence Secretary John Healey warned President Putin against any sabotage attempts, emphasizing the resilience of British underwater networks and the nation's commitment to protect them. The operation used over 500 UK personnel. Healey also detailed UK actions disrupting Russian shadow oil fleet activities in the English Channel, aimed at curtailing Kremlin's illegal oil revenues. Moreover, Healey reaffirmed US solidarity with NATO and highlighted the UK's increased defense spending amid global conflicts, including the Middle East war, which Russia allegedly seeks to use as a distraction. This marks a significant hybrid warfare incident involving maritime surveillance, counterintelligence, and protection of critical infrastructure.
