Specifically, 1066 people were stopped from illicit border crossings this year by mid-April. The government extended the enhanced border control measures near Belarus border until June 30, 2026, covering locales such as Ludza, Kraslava, Augšdaugava, Daugavpils, and Rēzekne districts. In the last 24 hours, 108 illegal crossing attempts were detected and prevented. The previous year saw 12,046 attempts stopped, with some migrants accepted on humanitarian grounds. The increased illegal migration is recognized as a security concern, leading to strengthened border patrol operations and government response.
