Border guards in Madonas novads arrested a human trafficker transporting six illegal migrants who crossed from Belarus. The migrants were returned to Belarus, and a criminal case was initiated. This is part of an ongoing operation to reduce illegal border crossings along Latvia's eastern border.
On Saturday prior to publication, border guards together with State Police detained an illegal migrant transporter in Madonas novads, Latvia. The operation involved stopping a Lexus vehicle driven by a Latvian non-citizen, found carrying six persons who had illegally crossed the Belarus-Latvia border without valid travel documents or visas. A criminal case was initiated against the transporter for facilitating illegal stay in Latvia. The illegal migrants were returned to the Belarus border. The operation is part of a broader Latvian border security initiative, 'Vilkatis', launched on August 11th to reduce illegal border crossings. In 2025, 138 criminal cases were started against 107 persons for unauthorized transport or facilitation of illegal stay. This year, Latvia prevented over 10,625 persons from illegally crossing the border with Belarus. The government extended enhanced border control until the end of the year across designated areas near Belarus due to increased irregular migrant flows.
Confidence: High
The incident involves the facilitation of illegal migration and border security enforcement; it represents hostile activity by traffickers but does not indicate direct state aggression or military operations.
