Belarusian dictator Lukashenko announced Russia will deploy Oreshnik missile system on Belarusian soil by end of 2023.
On July 1, 2023, Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko announced at a ceremony marking Independence Day that the Russian-made Oreshnik missile system will be deployed on Belarusian territory by the end of the year. The deployment was coordinated with Russia and aims to position new cruise missile capabilities closer to Europe, specifically targeting Poland and giving Russia strategic missile coverage beyond its own borders. Lukashenko claimed the system is not nuclear and compliant with international sanctions but confirmed it would deter invasion risks. Russia previously tested the missile system during a Nov 2022 strike on Ukraine. The Oreshnik is believed to be an upgraded variant of Russia’s RS-26 missile, originally produced in 2011. Lukashenko thanked Moscow for supporting this deployment to prevent potential uprisings and assert military strength in Belarus.
Confidence: High
The event describes the hostile deployment of Russian missile systems on Belarusian soil, expanding Russia's offensive military capabilities near NATO borders. The direct statement by Lukashenko represents a known Russian-allied regime facilitating aggressive weapon deployment. There is no indication the event relates to defense preparations by alliance members.
