Investigators uncovered a third drone with explosives near Leipzig/Halle Airport after two drones targeted aircraft on August 4, 2026, indicating a larger planned attack.
On August 4, 2026, an attempted drone attack took place at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Germany. Investigators discovered multiple drones involved, including a third drone found on August 14 in Kabelsketal near the airport. One drone carrying explosives was found near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft used for military transport; the explosive device did not detonate. Approximately 20 minutes later, a second drone reportedly collided with a DHL cargo plane during its aborted landing approach, causing damage to the aircraft's tail but leaving no drone debris found. Authorities found traces of about 50 grams of the high explosive Hexogen on the third drone. Additional suspicious electronic components and a makeshift antenna were found near the airport, possibly used for controlling the drones, along with a small fire site with melted metal parts and witness reports of a loud bang. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office are investigating the purpose and origin of the drones and explosives, suspecting a more extensive planned attack than publicly known.
Confidence: High
The use of multiple drones equipped with explosives targeting critical transport aircraft at a strategic civilian airport constitutes hostile and unconventional paramilitary activity, indicative of an attempted hybrid warfare attack.
